Best Pizza and Burgers 2026

Forget fine dining rankings. The two dishes generating the fiercest global competition and the most obsessive craft right now are pizza and the burger.

From a converted food truck in Chiswick to a wagyu patty made a dozen times a service in the West Village, these are the plates rewriting what “casual dining” means. For food retail professionals, this is a masterclass in scaling craft without losing soul. For everyone else, it’s simply where to eat next.

Highlights

Craft at scale: London’s Bleecker took the world’s top burger spot for 2026, proving a stripped-back cheeseburger philosophy travels further than complexity.

Third consecutive year: Napoli on the Road’s Michele Pascarella has held Europe’s number one pizza ranking three years running, built from a 2016 food truck.

Beef provenance as story: Sydney’s Café Margaret and Madrid’s Hundred Burgers built world-ranked reputations on named farms, dry-ageing and traceable butchery.

New territory: Tokyo’s Azabudai Hills now houses Asia-Pacific’s number one pizzeria, while Australia holds more global top-20 burger spots than any other country.

London

Craft Wars in the Big Smoke

A2D INSIGHT: When a food truck outranks Michelin-adjacent dining rooms three years running, you need to pay attention.

World’s 101 Best Burger Places named London’s Bleecker the number one burger restaurant on the planet for 2026. Its cheeseburger is deliberately minimal: dry-aged beef cooked pink, vivid orange cheese, onion and a secret sauce inside a glossy toasted seeded bun, available across eight sites from Spitalfields to Baker Street. Black Bear Burger took second place globally with its Bacon Miso Burger, giving London the top two spots in the world and more entries in the global top ten than any other city.

On pizza, Napoli on the Road, led by Michele Pascarella, took first place in the 50 Top Pizza Europa 2026 rankings for the third consecutive year, having grown from a 2016 food truck into three restaurants, most recently opening in Soho.

Where to go: 50 Kalò on Northumberland Avenue, founded by third-generation pizza-maker Ciro Salvo, who has studied the relationship between dough hydration and flavour, ranks fourth in Europe. For burgers, Honest Burgers serves The Honest, created by co-founder Tom Barton using sirloin flank dry-aged four weeks, red onion relish and thick-cut Wiltshire bacon, crowned Britain’s best at the National Burger Awards during the brand’s 15th anniversary year.

Scandinavia

The Sourdough Effect

A2D INSIGHT: Scandinavia proves a food culture built on discipline and seasonal sourcing can absorb an entirely foreign dish and make it unmistakably its own within a decade.

Christian Puglisi effectively started Copenhagen’s serious pizza culture when he opened Bæst in 2014, pairing slow-fermented sourdough bases and housemade mozzarella with local, seasonal ingredients and in-house-cured charcuterie. That lineage runs straight through the city’s current scene: Surt, opened in 2019 by Giuseppe Oliva, the man behind Bæst’s original pizza recipe, had its Marinara named Best Pizza of the Year at 50 Top Pizza Europa 2026, with the restaurant itself ranked twelfth across the whole continent.

On burgers, Gasoline Grill has expanded to nine locations around Copenhagen without loosening its standards, grinding organic beef fresh daily and building its reputation on a Butter Burger finished with a melting pat of butter on top; it was ranked the world’s second-best burger joint by World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants.

Where to go: Surt for the sourdough pedigree, or Diamond Slice for large-format New York-style slices topped with nduja, blue cheese and oyster mushroom. In Oslo, pizza arrived comparatively recently: Italian immigrant Gino Valente served the city’s first pizza in 1963, the same year American entrepreneur Louis Jordan founded rival chain Peppes Pizza, a rivalry between Italian and American styles still visible on Oslo menus today.

Europe

The Continental Circuit

A2D INSIGHT: A ranking spanning 35 countries and hundreds of inspected venues shows both pizza and the burger have become continental infrastructure, not imports.

50 Top Pizza’s 2026 European guide expanded from 50 to 60 pizzerias for its tenth edition, covering 200 pizzerias across 35 countries, with second place going to Madrid’s Baldoria under Ciro Cristiano and third to IMperfetto in Puteaux, France, founded by Tonino Coliano, who won the world Neapolitan pizza championship in Las Vegas in 2015.

Madrid also anchors Europe’s burger scene: Hundred Burgers, founded in 2020 by two friends who travelled through 22 countries researching the category before opening, serves the Singular, built on 60-day dry-aged Galician beef, cheddar, barbecue sauce and Camembert cream, and has been named Europe’s best by review site Burgerdudes. Nearby, Nolita makes just 11 of its €22 burgers per service, a 160g Cárnicas LyO-certified patty in a pretzel-brioche bun with a champagne fondue sauce.

Where to go: Gaspare Squietieri of Pizza Zulu in Fürth, Germany, was named Best Pizza Chef of the Year. Spain leads the pizza guide with 29 listed venues, ahead of France’s 24 and England’s 22, with Paris the most-represented city at 17.

New York

Where the Slice Meets the Smash

A2D INSIGHT: New York’s strength isn’t one hero venue, but it’s density. Twenty-four ranked pizzerias and eight ranked burger joints in one city means research trips here need a multi-stop tour, not a single reservation.

Una Pizza Napoletana, owned by Anthony Mangieri, was named the best pizzeria in the USA for 2026, in a state that fields 27 listed venues, more than any other, with New York City itself hosting 24. On burgers, eight New York spots made the World’s 101 Best Burgers 2026 list, more than Los Angeles, led by Sip & Guzzle at number six globally. Its A5 Miyazaki wagyu burger, from chefs Mike Bagale, formerly of Alinea, and Isaac Leidenfrost, is bound with a cured Jidori egg yolk, topped with a binchotan-smoked fermented cabbage slaw and a housemade “Kraft single,” and served on a sesame-studded potato bun brushed with dry-aged beef tallow; only twelve are made a day, available solely at the bar.

Where to go: L’industrie Pizzeria, owned by Massimo Laveglia and Nick Baglivo, topped the national pizza-by-the-slice ranking. East Village’s Nowon claimed eighth place worldwide with chef Jae Lee’s “Legendary Burger,” an umami-forward creation topped with kimchi special sauce and honey butter chips.

Tokyo & Sydney

The Southern Hemisphere & Far East Enter the Chat

A2D INSIGHT: Two categories, two hemispheres, one lesson: named-farm beef and Japanese precision now compete head-on with Naples and New York for bragging rights. Global rankings are no longer a home-nations game.

RistoPizza by Napoli sta ca, run by chef Giuseppe Errichiello inside Tokyo’s Azabudai Hills complex, was named the best pizzeria in Asia-Pacific for 2026, with Sydney’s gigi’s tying for third alongside Hong Kong’s Fiata. On burgers, Australia secured 11 spots on the inaugural World’s 101 Best Burger Places list, more than any country in the global top 20, with Sydney’s Café Margaret ranking third worldwide. Chef Neil Perry hand-forms a 160g patty daily from CopperTree Farms brisket and chuck, cooked pink and served with American cheese, onion, pickles and a rose mayo spiked with tomato and umami sauce, priced at AU$29.

Where to go: Restaurant Hubert, ranked 16th globally, relies on an 80/20 fat ratio blending dry-aged chuck, short rib and brisket, sharpened with a splash of pickle juice for acidity. In Tokyo, Smash Things in Komazawa-Daigaku smashes ultra-thin, 100% Japanese black wagyu patties for a crackling crust.

Lessons for Food Retail

First, provenance sells the story before the first bite: named farms, aged beef and traceable dough fermentation now outrank flashy toppings.

Second, craft scales when the fundamentals travel: Bleecker’s kiosk model, Napoli on the Road’s food-truck-to-three-sites arc and Gasoline Grill’s nine locations all prove format doesn’t dictate quality.

Third, rankings are globalising fast: Tokyo, Sydney and Madrid are now genuine contenders, not footnotes.
